How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

If you’ve recently had a breast augmentation procedure, or a breast lift with implants, you might find yourself wondering how long do breast implants last? Is this surgery experience one I’m going to need to anticipate having again?

All man made parts implanted into the human body may or may not last the entire lifetime of that individual. Additional procedures may become necessary in the future. The implant manufacturers provide a lifetime warranty covering implant replacement.

The experts at Turkle MD & Associates are here to answer you questions about your cosmetic breast surgeries

What are implants made of?

At Turkle MD & Associates, we use implants that are made from either saline or silicone gel. The saline implants have a silicone wall.  Some of the silicone gel implants come in a cohesive (gummy) form. We will discuss which type of implant is best for you during your consultation for your breast augmentation procedure.

How long do breast implants last?

Implants are constructed to last several decades.  The FDA recommends periodic screening of the  silicone implants by MRI to ensure the integrity of the device.  All of our patients go through an in depth consultation process, during which your provider will discuss necessary check ups and care to help your implants last longer.

Proper care begins in your breast augmentation recovery period, which your surgeon will discuss with you, as well. One crucial aspect is being sure to wear your support garment while your breasts are still healing.

Why would breast implants need to be removed or changed?

Some patients may decide that they would like to have their implants removed or replaced for their own comfort or aesthetic reasons. As you continue to age, the skin around your breasts may become more lax, causing the breasts to change shape around the implants.

In some cases the breast will harden with scar tissue around the implant, which can cause pain, tenderness, and changes in size or shape.

It’s also rare, but possible for saline or silicone implants to rupture. Which while harmless to the body, will dramatically affect the shape of the breast. Being diligent about regular check ups and exams can avoid this sort of complication.
